What's the Difference Between an Egg Bank and an Egg Donor Program?

An egg bank typically freezes and stores donor eggs in advance so they can be selected and shipped when needed, while an egg donor program coordinates a donor's cycle and matching process from start to finish.

As you learn about egg donation with Everie, you’ll hear these two terms often: egg bank and egg donor program. Understanding the differences between these two donation pathways can help you know what to expect from the process, including timing, matching, and how involved you want your journey to feel.

Egg Bank vs Egg Donor Agency

Egg Donation Type

The two options for donating your eggs are a fresh donation cycle or donating to a frozen egg bank. An egg bank stores and provides frozen eggs that are later matched to recipients, while an egg donor program or agency recruits donors for a fresh donation cycle with recipients. Some egg donor programs and agencies may provide both fresh cycle and frozen egg bank opportunities.

Donation Timeline and Compensation

The type of egg donation influences the timing, coordination, and overall egg donor process. If you choose to donate to an egg bank, you can move forward on your own schedule once you've completed the screening process. You will receive your compensation for each completed cycle.

In contrast, if you work with an agency or program and opt for a fresh donation cycle, the process will not begin until after the recipient parents have selected you. You will then be compensated for your fresh egg donation once the egg retrieval process is completed.

Matching

With frozen egg bank matches, the donor traditionally has no involvement in the matching process. In these arrangements, recipients select a donor from an existing bank of frozen eggs.

Egg donor programs, meanwhile, may offer more opportunities for personalized matching and flexibility in donor selection. At Everie, even if you make a frozen egg donation, you'll have a voice in our Mutual Matching™ process.

Once a set of recipient parents expresses interest in using your eggs, whether they are fresh or frozen, we will then contact you and say, “These/This recipient parent(s) would like to match with you for a fresh cycle or use a cohort of your eggs (if they’re frozen)."

We will also let you know what the recipients hope for as far as future contact or a relationship with you as their potential donor. By empowering both parties in the matching process, we aim to lay the groundwork for strong, lasting relationships as you begin this journey together.
