What Is the Process of Donating Eggs?
Egg donation with Everie follows 3 distinct phases: the pre-screening and qualification process, Mutual Matching™, and the egg donation procedure. Depending on whether you are a fresh or frozen egg donor, the order of the steps will vary. Learn more about how to be an egg donor below.
Pre-Screening & Qualification
Step # 1: Apply To Be an Egg Donor
The first step in becoming an egg donor with Everie is to fill out our application form. This pre-screening form helps us gather important information about you, including your medical and family history, lifestyle, and other personal information. Our team of experts will review your application to ensure you meet our eligibility requirements, including age, BMI, and overall health.
Step # 2: Meet Our Team
If you are a good fit for egg donation, the next step is to meet with us! During this step, we’ll get to know more about you, answer your questions, and explore your egg donation options, including fresh vs. frozen egg donation and the level of identity disclosure you desire.
Step # 3: Complete Additional Screenings
Next, we will ask you to complete additional health screenings, including medical and psychological evaluations. These tests help us make sure that egg donation will be safe for you and any children conceived from your eggs and that you are mentally and emotionally ready for the egg donation process. If, for any reason, you aren't able to move forward in the process, we will still compensate you for your time.
Mutual Matching
If you are a fresh egg donor, you will move directly forward to the matching process. Frozen egg donors will proceed to Egg Retrieval (below) and then end with matching.
Step # 4: Set Up Your Everie Profile
Create your egg donor profile to begin the matching process. You can share stories, photos, why you want to help someone grow their family, and more. We even let you upload videos to help make your profile as vibrant and engaging as you are!
Step # 5: Meet Interested Recipient Parents
Our Everie egg donors are empowered to say “YES!” to the individual or couple they help. Once recipient parents are interested in matching, you can review their information and, if desired, speak to them on a video call.
Step # 6: Find Your Mutual Match
If it’s the right fit for both of you, then congratulations! It’s a match. You will need to sign some legal paperwork to establish your recipient’s parental rights to their donor-conceived children, but you can now move on to the exciting next step: egg retrieval.
Egg Retrieval
For fresh egg donors, this is the final stage of the process.
Step # 7: Begin Medications
The procedure for donating eggs begins with the donor taking follicle-stimulating medications to increase the number of eggs produced during their menstrual cycle. These hormonal shots are generally self-administered over a 10- to 13-day period leading up to the egg retrieval procedure.
Once you have a sufficient number of mature eggs, your physician will give you an injection of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which will prepare your ovaries to release the eggs. This injection is usually done 36 hours before retrieval.
Step # 8: Donate Your Eggs
You will be sedated for this quick, 20-minute egg retrieval procedure. An ultrasound probe will be inserted vaginally to identify follicles with mature eggs. These eggs are then suctioned out through a thin needle, where they will be preserved for future use. Recovery from this procedure is typically easy and can last between 1 day to 1 week.
Step # 9: Receive Compensation
Following your procedure, you will receive compensation for the immeasurable gift you have given your recipient family. It’s time to celebrate and enjoy the completion of this egg donation journey! Many women choose to complete multiple donation cycles (up to 6). If you are interested in returning as an experienced donor, you usually need to wait 3 months before starting the process again.
After donating their eggs, frozen egg donors are now eligible to move forward with matching (see the section above on how our Mutual Match process works).
How Long Does the Egg Donation Process Take?
Your timeline will vary depending on whether you choose to be a fresh or frozen egg donor. Fresh donors often need 4 to 6 months to go through the process, while frozen donors (who don’t need to match with a parent before donating) typically complete the process in 3. However, each egg donation journey is unique.
